Blue Cove Lodge was founded on the belief that senior living could be as meaningful and purposeful as any chapter of life. We've been proving that belief right since 2001.
Captain George Whitfield spent 30 years in the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Fleet and eventually rising to the rank of Captain. When he retired, he brought with him everything the Navy had taught him about leadership: discipline, clear communication, genuine care for those in your charge, and an unshakeable belief in the importance of community.
His wife Helen, a registered nurse with a background in geriatric care, brought the clinical foundation. Together they found a waterfront property on Shelter Island that had once been a small hotel — and they saw something extraordinary in it. Blue Cove Lodge opened in 2001 with 40 residents. Today it is home to 90, and Helen Whitfield remains at the helm.
These four values aren't aspirational slogans — they're the operating principles that guide every decision our team makes, from clinical care to menu choices to how we greet families at the door.
Inspired by Captain George's Navy career, we hold service as our highest calling. Every team member comes to work knowing their role is to serve — and that serving with excellence is a source of genuine pride.
The sea teaches resilience. We build it into our programmes, our environments, and our relationships — helping residents navigate the tides of ageing with courage, not fear.
We communicate clearly — with residents, with families, and with each other. No jargon, no evasions. Families should always know exactly how their loved one is doing and why we're doing what we do.
Blue Cove Lodge is not a facility — it's a community. We invest in relationships between residents, between staff, and between the Lodge and the broader San Diego neighbourhood we call home.
Our leadership team averages 14 years of tenure at Blue Cove Lodge. That stability is one of our greatest strengths — our residents know the faces, and the faces know the residents.
Director Helen Whitfield still conducts a morning walk-through of every wing each weekday. She believes leadership must be visible, present, and genuinely engaged with the realities of daily care.
