Nearly four decades of dedicated service to the families of Savannah — built on one physician's promise to do better for those he loved most.
Our Story
In 1987, Dr. James Whitmore — a geriatric physician who had served the people of Savannah for three decades — made a decision that would alter the course of his family's life and of senior care in this community. When his mother required residential support, the options available to her were, in his words, "cold, institutional, and utterly disrespectful of a life fully lived."
Together with his wife Constance, Dr. Whitmore converted their historic Georgian property on Abercorn Street into the first iteration of Heritage House. The founding vision was straightforward: a place where the warmth of Southern hospitality, the rigour of genuine clinical excellence, and deep respect for individual dignity would coexist without compromise.
In 1987, that meant six residents and a staff of four. Today Heritage House serves 108 residents across four levels of care, employs more than 90 dedicated professionals, and remains under the stewardship of the Whitmore family — now led by Dr. Whitmore's daughter, Constance Jr. The founding promise has never changed.
What We Believe
Every resident is a full person with a history, preferences, and rights. Our care begins and ends with radical respect for each individual.
Families are not visitors here — they are co-authors of the care journey. We build genuine partnerships grounded in transparency and trust.
True wellbeing encompasses physical health, mental stimulation, spiritual fulfilment, and social connection. We attend to every dimension.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards and pursue excellence relentlessly — through staff training, clinical audits, and family feedback.
Leadership & Mission
Heritage House is a family-owned, mission-driven organisation. We have never sought external investors or corporate acquisition — a deliberate decision that keeps our priorities exactly where they belong: on our residents and their families.
Our mission is simple to state and demanding to live by: "To provide exceptional, dignified care that honours the individuality of every resident, supports every family, and upholds the highest standards of the profession."
We participate in Georgia's Quality Incentive Programme and subject ourselves to voluntary inspection above the state-mandated minimum. We believe accountability and transparency are prerequisites, not aspirations.
