From the verandah at sunrise to the music room at dusk, every day at Heritage House is designed to nourish the whole person — in the tradition of Southern hospitality at its very finest.
Welcome Home
At Heritage House, we reject the idea that moving into residential care means a diminished life. Our community is vibrant, social, and full of possibility — designed to offer residents the companionship, stimulation, and comfort of a true home, not an institution.
Our historic Abercorn Street property offers beautifully maintained common rooms, a walled garden, a library, a chapel, an arts studio, and a dining room that our residents genuinely look forward to gathering in each day. The rhythm of life here is unhurried but purposeful.
A Typical Day
Every day at Heritage House has its own gentle rhythm. This is a representative schedule — residents are always free to join activities, rest in their rooms, or spend time with visitors according to their own wishes.
Care staff provide personalised morning assistance. Early risers gather on the verandah for coffee and the morning paper.
Chef-prepared hot breakfast served in the dining room. Fresh-squeezed juice, biscuits, and seasonal fruits are always on offer.
Choices include gentle exercise class, garden club, Bible study, watercolour class, or simply a stroll through the walled garden.
The main meal of the day, served in the formal dining room. A choice of two courses and always a Southern comfort option on the menu.
A quiet period for rest, reading, or receiving family visitors. Our lounge is open for private family time throughout the afternoon.
Afternoon tea is served, followed by a scheduled social event — often a guest recital, lecture, trivia afternoon, or community outing.
A lighter evening meal with fresh soup, salads, and hot entrée options. A favourite social hour for many residents.
Music in the parlour, a film screening, or simply quiet time. Evening care rounds begin, with staff available through the night.
Culinary Programme
Food is at the heart of Southern culture — and dining at Heritage House is a genuine pleasure, not an institutional obligation. Our head chef trained in Charleston and brings a refined but accessible Southern culinary sensibility to every meal.
Residents are involved in menu planning through our quarterly Resident Food Council, and all dietary requirements — including diabetic, low-sodium, pureed, and allergen-aware diets — are met with skill and respect.
Enrichment & Activities
Weekly studio sessions led by a local artist — from watercolour landscapes of Savannah to ceramics and needlework. All levels welcome.
Piano recitals, visiting choirs, and weekly hymn-singing led by Reverend Atkins. Music is woven into the fabric of daily life here.
Our walled garden is maintained by residents and staff together. Seasonal planting, herb beds, and a greenhouse keep green thumbs busy year-round.
Monthly talks from historians, authors, scientists, and local figures. Our residents remain intellectually curious and engaged with the world.
Chair yoga, gentle stretching, and walking groups adapted to every ability. Our physiotherapist guides the programme with safety and joy in mind.
Organised trips to Forsyth Park, Bonaventure Cemetery, local museums, and seasonal events. Our minibus runs weekly for those who wish to explore.
Your Private Space
Our rooms are not generic. Each one is part of a building that has been a home since 1987, and the character of that history is felt in every hallway and every corner. Residents are warmly encouraged to bring their own furniture, photographs, and possessions.
